Insight: News Network: Stockton / Voices From The Drought / Davis Science Cafe / "This Day In June"

Published June 10, 2014

There was a lot happening in Stockton last week. A judge failed to rule whether Stockton could cut payments to CalPERS as part of its bankruptcy -a possibly historic ruling- while a three-alarm fire destroyed the city's historic Hotel Earle. Plus, San Joaquin County recorded its lowest ever voter turnout and county district attorney candidate Gary Hickey was arrested for the 5th time in two months. Stockton Record Columnist Michael Fitzgerald has been paying attention to all these stories and joins us to add a little context to what's going on in his city.

Inspired by Caroline Henderson's "Letters from the Dust Bowl," a UC Davis researcher and a UC Davis science writer have set out to collect firsthand stories of the drought from California farmers and ranchers. The project is called Voices from the Drought and it's designed to serve as a historical record of the drought's real life effect on small farmers in California. The creator of the project, Ken Tate, is a UC Davis professor of plant sciences and a rangeland watershed specialist. His partner is Brad Hooker, a science writer in the UC Davis Department of Plant Sciences. They both join us with some of the voices they've collected from the drought.

UC Davis Professor Bruce German will be speaking about lactation and the role of bacteria in overall health at the next Davis Science Cafe this Wednesday, June 11. We'll talk with German about his research and we'll find out more about the Davis Science Cafe and why people are coming together to talk science over beer.

Sacramento City College psychology professor Gayle Pitman is the author of a new children's book called "This Day in June." The book tells the story of a Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Pride celebration. Pitman will be signing copies of her book at the Sacramento LGBT Center this Saturday after the city's Pride Parade.
